The Best Beans

Thursday Thirteen - Grandma isn't listless anymore
On Easter morning, we awoke to overflowing baskets. The Bunny knows us well, so our loot included plenty of jelly beans. Not ordinary jelly beans, but Jelly Belly beans.

The Jelly Belly history dates back to 1869 when the Goelitz brothers came to the US and started a candy factory. But it was almost one hundred years before they began to produce jelly beans. Ronald Reagan became a fan while he was Governor of California and they traveled with him to the White House. The blueberry Jelly Belly was created so that Reagan could serve red, white and blue jelly beans at his inaugural parties. Jelly Belly also holds the honor of being the first jelly bean in outer space.

These quality jelly beans come in a wide variety of flavors. One category, the Harry Potter inspired BeanBoozled, includes Toothpaste, Dog Food, Rotten Egg and Skunk Spray flavored beans. I'm not that adventurous, but there are plenty of other flavors to choose from. If you haven't guessed by now, Grandma's favorite jelly bean flavors are the subject of today's list.
  1. Blueberry
  2. Buttered Popcorn
  3. Caramel Corn
  4. Cinnamon
  5. Coconut
  6. Cranberry
  7. French Vanilla
  8. Lemon Lime
  9. Licorice
  10. Margarita
  11. Sour Lemon
  12. Tangerine
  13. Toasted Marshmallow
If you'd like to learn more about the history, buy some beans or get a degree in Beanology, just head over to Jelly Belly and check it out.

  1. I suppose the nearest we have in the UK to these are Jelly Babies. Everyone begins by biting off their heads. It's just some ghoulish thing deep within us, I suppose.

  7. Fun T13. I'll never forget the day that my son talked my father-in-law into trying the HP jelly bellies. It was hilarious. And I'm not that adventurous either.

  9. I can't remember which brand Pres. Reagan favored but they had the coolest flavors and were so expensive! Blueberry's my favorite too.

  10. When I think of jelly beans I think Pres. Reagan too. Sounds like interesting flavors. Licorice is about all I think I would like though.

Thanks for sharing. Happy TT! :)

  12. I've never been a big fan of any jelly bean, but Jelly Bellies are the best, and well qualified to make something as quirky as the Harry Potter ones.

  13. I came by earlier today, but my computer at work would not let me leave a comment! Have you ever tasted the "dirt" or "ear wax" jelly bellies? They had those in the Harry Potter collection. Ewww! But popcorn... that one is good!

  14. I remember the "ear wax" ones in Harry Potter, but I'd never try them. Talk about disgusting!

  15. I love the S'mores flavor.
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to be visiting Fairfield, CA where a JB plant is. I had a tour. Wow! That is one amazing place. I bought more JB than any one person should ever buy at one time. But they made great gifts.

  17. Hi Grandma,

(I adored your pun about yellowing teeth, BTW, on my T-13 post last wk!). I'm not sure if I've had this brand of jellybeans, but the times I've had delicious jellybeans have been a real treat. I'm salivating at the thought. Glad you indulged your taste buds w/ your family. Great tradition. From your list, I'd like #1,2, 3,4,5,7, and 13.

  18. Some of them are Harry Potter inspired? Now I'm interested. I think I'd like nos. 8, 12 and 13. Neither did I know there was a degree in Beanology; learned a few things here. Thanks.
