Moving

House hunting proved far more difficult than anticipated. We were happy to find a home, where the owner agreed to let us replace carpeting with a wood laminate. That seemed to signal a change in luck. A couple days later, the owner decided to pay for the flooring and installation. We certainly didn’t argue. After signing the papers, we had a couple more offers, including a brick home with hardwood floors that sat in the middle of sixty acres of fields and woods. If we’d learned about it a few days earlier, that might have been our first choice. We are happy with our selection, however.

Moving has been completed, although everything was loaded into the garage pending completion of the flooring today. Tomorrow, Calico will be driving us to our new home.
The house does have its idiosyncrasies. Since it was built in 1986, we assumed that there would be a water line for the refrigerator’s ice maker. Calico says she can easily install one, but the lack took us by surprise. No dishwasher, either. That can also be fixed, although we don’t have immediate plans to do it. We are still trying to understand the logic that requires you to walk through the main bathroom to access the laundry room. An entrance could easily have been made from the kitchen area, so we haven’t been able to come up with an explanation. It creates a poor design for both the bathroom and the utility room. There is a half bath off the master bedroom. I think it was added as an afterthought and not part of the original design. The space doesn’t lend itself to a bath tub, but I’m surprised that there isn’t a shower. One could have been easily added.

Since we are renting and only plan on living in this area until Calico finishes college, we won’t be making any huge changes. The bathrooms are in good condition, but badly in need of updating. If it was a permanent home, I’d vote for a natural stone-tiled shower with a rainfall shower head and stone vessel sinks for both the main bath and half-bath. The reality will probably be new towels and a coat of paint. At least I can dream. It will give me something to do, while we unpack everything that we just finished packing!
