Cavoodlin’ In New Zealand

Cavoodlin’? What’s that? Could it be a new type of sport? Or is it a euphemism for something a bit risqué? No, it’s just Grandma getting a bit of a canine education. That’s the story in a nutshell, but read on for the unedited version.

Let me assure you that we’re not in the market for another dog. We adore our border collie. While, at the age of eleven years, he’s showing a few signs of slowing down, we’re hoping to enjoy him for many more years. While purusing some sites on New Zealand, however, I saw a link to “Cavoodle Puppies for Sale”. I had to learn more. What the heck is a Cavoodle?

When I checked out some pictures, I found that Cavoodles look a lot like a dog we had many years ago. Cupcake had been originally been named Satin by my daughter. There was nothing satiny about her curly, tousled coat, so I’m not sure what prompted the choice. But she was as sweet as a cupcake and that was the name that stuck. She had such youthful enthusiasm that folks were always asking to pat our puppy, even when she had advanced to her senior years. Cupcake was a Cockapoo and a quick search for Cavoodles explained the similarity. Cockapoos are a mix of cocker spaniel, either American or British, and poodle. A Cavoodle is a mix of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a poodle. That sounds, and looks, a lot like a Cockapoo to me. I’m not sure what I expected. Maybe that they were wearing a little crown?

The Cavoodle puppies in the ad came from New Zealand, although you don’t have to travel that far to own one. They’ve been available in the U.S. since the nineties. Since we’re the roaming type, it might be more fun to travel to New Zealand to check them out. I’d love a vacation down under.

Who knows? If we loved the country, we might even move there.

That’s not likely, however. The cats can drive us nuts on a short trip to the vet. A trip halfway around the world? Even daydreams have their limits!
