Can't Take It With You

Thursday Thirteen - Grandma isn't listless anymore
You have to leave your home and everything in it. There will be basic furnishings, linens and food at your new place. Your family and pets can come too. After six months, you can purchase other items. But you can never go back and retrieve the things left at your home.

What could you live without for six months? How about forever?

Here's what I'm taking.
  1. Medications. Wouldn't last 6 months without them.
  2. Clothes. I'm not sure what the weather's like at the new location, but I don't want to freeze. Even if it's warm, Grandma's not into scaring people.
  3. Cosmetic Case. No need for lipstick and mascara, but I'd prefer not to spend 6 months without soap, toothpaste and deodorant. Bet my family would prefer it too.
  4. Computers. Even without an internet connection, although that seems like a basic from my perspective. I'm not sharing with Calico and Miss Muffin either, so their's are coming as well. No that doesn't count as multiple items. Afterall, I am making the rules.
  5. Keyboard. What's life without a little music? And Miss Muffin can entertain herself for hours with it.
  6. Photos. If I had them scanned and uploaded, I'd leave the hard copies and download them when I reached my location. But many of the treasured ones have never been introduced to the virtual world. There's some motivation to start scanning.
  7. Glasses. Don't want to spend 6 months in a blur.
  8. Canes. Mobility rates.
  9. Complete Works of Stephen King. That will keep Calico happy for a long time. If it's in large print, I'd enjoy it too.
  10. Miss Muffin's Security System This is a cheat and I know it. But my granddaughter still has her security blanket and enough stuffed animals for 10 lists. Without them, none of us would sleep.
  11. My Parent's Coffee Mugs. They feel close each time we use them.
  12. My Grandparent's Antique Desk. It's been with me for years. It spells home.
  13. The car. Assuming we are provided with transportation to the new home, I could easily live 6 months without going anywhere. Not so sure about the rest of the family.

The list surprised me a bit. I just started writing items as they occurred to me. At the end, there were more practical items and fewer sentimental than I'd anticipated. But I don't think I'd change it.

What would you bring?

Grandma

  1. Good list. I especially like it that you'll take #12.

  2. I lived out of a suitcase for many years, and when married I moved all over the place, so I identify with this.

  3. Love live your grandparents antique desk. I have an affinity for some old things. They carry a lot of sentimental value.

  5. Great idea for a T13. Mind if I borrow it :)

I would take a lot of the same things you have on your list. I would have to add my camera.

  6. Interesting idea, Grandma. I'm with you on the photo albums (and with the hope one day I'll get them all scanned into the computer). Love the parents' mugs and grandparents' desk.

Absolute must for me would be mantle clock my dad made for me.

  7. I believe I'd have to take along my husband! LOL. I'd take the computer (with a printer) for sure and basic necessities like clothes. Also my ipod for music. Great TT!

  9. Photo albums. I'm always afraid of forgetting things & photos help me remember the little things I treasure.

  12. Thanks for your comment on my post. Let's see... I would also bring photos and my scrapbooks and computer. And definitely clothes and toiletries. I might be able to live without a car if I didn't have to chauffer anyone to places! This was a fun T13!

  13. 'Clothes. I don't want to freeze. Even if it's warm, Grandma's not into scaring people.'

    LOL!

I love #11. Good choice. As for me, my box of special Christmas ornaments would have to come with me.

  14. Great list!

I would also have to take my medications (wouldn't get very far without my inahler), clothes (I'm always cold unless it's 80 degrees or warmer), photos and my camera (life would be so sad without), books and more books!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! :)

  15. Now you've got me thinking... I'd need some sort of word processor, not necessarily a full computer -- without those distractions I bet I'd roar back into Internet Land with a few new books -- and a ton of new fiction for the blog, as well.

It's a tempting idea, you know...
